As Michael pointed out, the recent study on the impact of overly diluted cleansers and innefective cleansers on microbrial growth is significant. It was also good to see that bleach was considered a 'gold standard' in efficacy with the comments showing that even MRSA are not safe from straight bleach.

My question relates to the concentration of bleach necessary and the amount of exposure time necessary to be efficaceous. If there was a simple agreed level for this, could a cleaner be 'certified' as effective at reaching 100% of microbes for the surfaces that it properly contacted (assuming that directions were followed)?

When people see "99+% effective" they may think that they are taking care of everything, but the study shows that its the <1% that is left behind that can lead to MRSA.

How would consumers have to be empowered/educated to create a product that gives them confidence they are getting the <1% of bad bugs? What level of NaClO concentration/dilution would uphold this claim?

Recent study suggests that misuse of a common quaternary biocide, benzalkonium chloride, could result in development of antibiotic resistance,, particularly in Pseudomona aeruginosa - a common bacteria found in hospital-spread infections.

Some discussion on compliance issues noted - including tendency to use diluted products to save money and shorter than recommended cleaning/exposure times - which leave resistant bacteria behind.

Yet, this effect has not been show to occur outside of the lab and the widespread commercial use of antibiotics in ranch animals is thought to be the major cause of developing resistance.

Seventh Generation has partnered with CleanWell and has cracked the code on disinfectants using only 'natural' actives, apparently satisfying EPA requirements by using a modified claim "Kills 99.99% of Germs botanically* " rather than explicitly relying on the word 'natural' in the efficacy claim or product description.

The disinfectant product is based on Thymol, an antimicrobial essential oil found in thyme and covered under patents held by their CleanWell partners (assigned to DeAth, OhSo Clean LLC).

An issue may be consumer acceptance of an admittedly strong fragrant herb smell that reminds me at least of fresh pizza!

Anyone try this or similar product? Let me know what you think?
