Zemea propanediol is a new ingredient (Spring 2009) offered by DuPont Tate & Lyle Bio Products for use in skin care applications.

Claims are to being a "non-petroleumbased glycol that offers excellent hydration and does not irriate the skin" (Contact Joseph DeSalvo at DuPont T&LBP). Fermented from corn sugar.

Recently approved by Ecocert as a natural ingredient.

Also, Cleaningredients has recently listed Zemea as "DFE" approved - THE FIRST SOLVENT to be approved under DFE!!

Currently, competitors (like Rockline) are using non-petroleum based ingredients in their wipe products (glycerine, corn-based sorbitols in addition to plant oils).

They are sourced from around the world and have amazing fragrance/scents. These types of ingredients are infinitely interesting to the consumer, who feels they are somewhat international and 'in the know' by recognizing and using these rare ingredients.

George at Tritech turned me onto this company. They have an interesting business model for finding novel materials for personal care by reaching into the waste heap of biomedical and pharma and reapplying well researched ingredients in consumer personal care products.
