    Title of Your Idea:
    unscented
    What's Your Idea?:

I was one of the kids growing up that if the house was cleaned with Pine-sol I had to leave the house till it was aired out. I have asthma and can't handle strong the scent Pine-Sol

Would it be possible to have the strength and cleaning power of Pine-sol without the smell of pine?

I wonder if the research scientists can harness the chemical-smell-masking-properties of my aforementioned vanilla/cottonball mention! I mean, not in the "create a godawfully strong vanilla scent" kind of way, but in a "muted for the sensitive to scents folks" kind of way.

Vanilla is so much easier to handle smell wise than Pine is, or Bleach in fact. I think you got a great idea and such submit it as an idea!! Maybe they will listen and you win a little something..

I in fact is going to try this out for myself.. I like the smell of peppermint and its a easy cheap oil to buy.. thanks for the idea!!

Wow thanks! When I was looking over the products, I remember what happen as a kid, I can't use Pine-sol now because

of the scent. If it was scent-free I would use it a heartbeat!!

Do you feel that way about other Clorox brand products?

      • Kim Snyder
posted February 4, 2011 by Kim SnyderInfluential Innovators  Permalink

Yeah I do in fact. My biggest issue with a lot of products is the scent. Not all scents, just really strong ones. Pine is something I react too.. Beach regular is scent is the same way.. can't use it. But Beach does come in a scent I can use, only because it covers up the scent of beach enough.

I agree :). When I was growing up, there were two smells that meant the house was in a state of "clean"...Clorox Bleach and Pine Sol (depending on who was cleaning and what the room was...). For some reason, when I was pregnant with the last two children, I could NOT take the strong smell of Pine Sol. I remembered reading a long while back about strategically placing cotton balls soaked in pure vanilla extract (then squeeze the excess out) to absorb chemical odors when you are painting, so I started doing that and it REALLY helped to temper it for me. I do it now, sometimes, too, to mask the fact that yes, I indeed JUST got done cleaning the bathroom right before the doorbell rang (HECK no, it's not always that clean OR clean smelling  AHAHAHA!)

Wow! really interesting about the vanilla. Are you using large bags of cotton balls soaked in vanilla extract and just leaving it in the bathrroom or areas you clean? Do you leave it near your bucket of cleaner or in the middle of the room and for how long? I'm going to try this out at home.

I would think you would leave them after you have cleaned and till you can't smell the cleaning product. And large balls cotton balls. I am going to test this out with Peppermint oil today in fact. I got a kitchen floor that needs to be cleaned again.  I also think to would be better if you used pure vanilla extract, not the fake kind.

eek...so do I, as I was reminded when my son "skated" into the kitchen with his footed pj's on ... let's just sayy his little footies were less then pretty :). I would love to know how the peppermint works :).

I use the large cotton balls. Before I clean, I pour a small bottle of pure vanilla extract into one of my pyrex custard cups,  fill the cup with cotton  balls, and let the cotton balls soak up the liquid. Then I squeeze out the excess liquid (until they don't drip, but are still moist) and put them into a ziploc bag to carry around to the different rooms (so they don't dry out). In every room where I know I'm using a stronger smelling product (read bathroom and kitchen), I lay a couple of the cotton balls (usually inside if a small paper cup in an inconspicuous spot if there are no "safe" surfaces to lay them (they can stain). I leave them there until they dry up then toss them. It really does help cut the chemical scent.

Whatever excess vanilla there is I pour into a large glass bowl, put in my trusty $1 store dish towel, cover with boiling water, then (with my cleaning cloves on to temper the heat!) take the soaking wet towel (unwrung) and put it in the microwave on high 2 minutes, letting it stay in there for 5-10 min. more after "cooking. The steam loosens any of the gunk that spatters from those who shall remain nameless and too lazy to cover anything tehy nuke (read spouse and children). I don't like to taste or smell chemical inside the microwave, and, while it can be accomplished with just plain water, I love the smell of warm vanilla :). Maybe it's  because it's relaxing, maybe it's because my husband once told me that most men favor the scent of vanilla over any other scent, I don't know. But please don't have the illusion that I have an awesomely clean smelling vanilla-y house ALL the time... One of the small ones is hell on wheels, (although, he LOVES to clean the toilet with the brush almost as much as he loves to "guy it up" in there...weird, huh?) ;).

            Hi Brenda,

Thanks so much for sharing your house-hold secrets with us. I had no idea about the power of Vanilla! I'm still wondering how Kim's Peppermint oil worked out... does it work the same way?

I ended up having a major asthma attack yesterday so no cleaning for me. But I did later that night just leave cotton balls soaked with peppermint oil in some little containers I have. When I tried 409 lemon scented , which started causing my breathing to act up I put peppermint cotton ball under my nose and it helped calm my breathing down. So it doesn't work if you just leave it in a area after cleaning.. but it does help when you can't handle the scent of something.

I was trying to get coffee stains off my counter again, and I had forgotten that 409 lemon scented can at times cause me issues..

I think I just need a household full of unscented cleansers.. sigh

GREAT to know that the peppermint calmed your breathing down! Sorry about the bad asthma attack, though...it would be nice for you to be able to find something to use that didn't trigger it :).

      Kim,

Sorry to hear that you had an asthma attack, ; ( I hope you are feeling better.

Have you tried some of the Green Works products?

posted February 9, 2011 by Kim SnyderInfluential Innovators  Permalink

No I haven't tried Green Works Products. I have to go shopping today.. I just might see what they offer in household cleaning. Like for counters.

I have found that when I go totally natural, those type cleaners don't do as well, but they don't cause me problems with my asthma so its a sad trade-off for sure..

I have heard a lot of good feedback on the 'real' cleaning power of Green Works. I have not tried it yet simply because I have been using the standard Clorox brand products for a long time ; ) here is a link to the Green Works site. Let me know how it goes. I am curious how you feel about Green Works?

I haven't tried the Green Works, but only because I still have a ton of the standard cleaners from the last couple times I "stocked up" when there was a sale/coupon deal. It's on my to do list, though!

posted February 14, 2011 by Kim SnyderInfluential Innovators  Permalink

I only got the spray and it did clean what I wanted to clean up. My son tends to be messy but even at 26 years old he still forgets to clean up after himself.. lol

I like a spray that you just spray wait a minute or so and wipe up with a papertowel.. it didn't get the coffee stain off my counter but I am not sure anything is going to.

Till I tried Green Works I was using a product called Holy Cow because I rather use something as natural as possible..
