Shetterly, the CEO from 1968 to 1980, told the following story about former CEO William Roth and how he led the company by extending the commitment to Corporate Responsibility to our business partners.
“Over a long period of years, the Company had gained a reputation for fair dealing with [suppliers], even if doing so was sometimes costly. For example, during the early stages of World War II, the shortage of chlorine sent its price sharply up. Clorox had a long-term contract to buy chlorine at a price well below the wartime level. But Mr. Roth recognized the hardship this placed on the supplier. He tore up the old contract and began paying the higher price. Small wonder, with this kind of consideration, that our suppliers felt a special kind of loyalty to the Company.”
