We all know that William C.R. Murray was The Clorox Company’s first beloved general manager, but what do we know about his wife? As Doris Moss recounted candidly, “She was a remarkable woman to whom The Clorox Company should offer gratitude.”
Most widely credited for offering free samples of household Clorox® liquid bleach at the Murray’s grocery store, which she took over when her husband became the general manager of the Electro-Alkaline Company in 1916, Annie Murray was a true champion for the company. She grew up in Scotland near the Balmoral Castle and although her life was not an easy one, through her own perseverance and strength of character, she became a nurse. As a young girl, she came to America to live with the Dalziel family in Oakland, California, and after marrying Bill Murray, she helped to embody the familial culture that the company still reflects today.
Annie also worked in the general office beside her husband and kept the books, managed the office and helped establish the young company soundly and focused its values around generosity and kindness. Annie is just one of the many women throughout the company’s history who has helped the company become the organization as we know it today.
