Summary:
Does anyone know of any solvents that are natural or have the possibility to be made natural?
Content:
Ideally, I am looking for something that has the following physical properties:
- vapor pressure between 0.01 and 0.1 mm Hg at 20C
- not considered a VOC (LVP-VOC is ok)
- is >90% natural
I am open to other solvent options as well, so if you've got any ideas about natural solvents, please let me know. Thanks!

Hello Laura:
Our Zemea propanediol is a 100% natural solvent made from corn sugar. It meets all your criteria listed above.
Please see the attached file for additional detail and let me know if you have any questions, or would like a sample to evaluate.
Thanks, Pete.

Hey Laura - nice post from Pete! Please follow up on that one! I'd also reco talking to Pheobe Stinson (I can never spell her first name correctly, sorry Pheobe, or Phoebe). She's been working on a lot of natural solvents as well.

Hi Pete,
Thanks for the suggestion, I will definitely test it out. Do you guys have any other natural solvents in your portfolio?

Hello Laura, Zemea is the only natural solvent in our portfolio. What application are you interested in ? Where would you like me to send a sample and how much?
Please feel free to contact me anytime. Thanks.

Hi Pete,
I am also very interested in the solvent you mentioned, except I'm looking for a flashpoint b/w 100 F and 140 F. Does your Zemea fall in the right range? Do you have any other alcohol-based or polar solvents that are flammable in the same flashpoint range (they don't necessarily have to be naturally derived at this point, but having the potential to be is a plus). Thanks!

Hello and thank you for your interest in Zemea. The flash point of Zemea is 129 C, so unfortunately it falls outside of your desired range. This is the only solvent offered by DuPont Tate & Lyle Bio Products. Good luck on your solvent search and thanks again for your interest. I have attached a Physical Properties sheet for Zemea.
Regards, Pete.

Hi Laura, As I am new, I don't know if you are still looking but you should try Lactate solvents (Purac makes them search on Ethyl lactate or purasolv). There are several esters on the market having a variety of vapour pressures and boiling points. Regards Wim

Hi Laura, I'd suggest you droping few lines on this to Jorge Molinari (jorge.molinari@clorox.com) He is based in Buenos Aires working for clorox at the Buenos Aires Clorox Int'l Tech Center. He has been involved in a project, working with raw materials like the one you're looking for. Good Luck!
